Passive fire protection is built into the structure of a building and is a vital component of any fire strategy in protecting people's lives and limiting the damage caused to a building.

Passive fire protection limits the spread of fire and smoke, helps to shield essential escape routes and protects the structural integrity of the building.

Passive Fire Protection methods are built into the structure of a building, creating a separation of the building into areas of risk that are far more manageable in the event of a fire.

Passive Fire Protection is initially provided by the structure of the building with additional passive fire protection materials being added in situations where the fire protection has been compromised, for example during refurbishment works.

Passive fire protection methods are designed to stop the progress of fumes, flames and contain the thermal effects and stability of the building structure. 

Passive fire protection works without human intervention and without an external energy input. 

This fire protection method assists in allowing the evacuation of a building, intervention of the emergency services and confining the fire in a compartmentalised space for as long as possible.

There are two types of passive fire protection, structural protection solutions such as intumescent paints, as well as firewall solutions for internal divisions such as mastics and graphite installations.
